Perfboard is a fairly standard prototyping resource. While it lacks the polish and reliability of finished PCBs, it nevertheless gets the job done. When you want your prototype to be more permanent than your solderless breadboard version, perfboard is your next step.

Using

Perfboard is a phenolic board with holes spaced every 0.100″. On the bottom side, each hole also has a surrounding copper pad. Perfboards are usually single-sided. Components are inserted on the top side, and connecting wires are placed on both the top and bottom sides to make all the connections.

Tips

  1. It is better to make all connections with wire rather than trying to bridge adjacent pads with solder. Using excessive amounts of solder to make bridges often leads to unwanted bridging which will then short out your circuit.
  2. It is acceptable to use extra component lead lengths on the bottom to make connections. Even better is to bend these leads all in one direction, similar to stripboard, which leads to the next tip:
  3. Using perfboard is best for only very simple projects where the wiring is simple and can be easily checked. For more complicated circuits, switching to stripboard in conjuction with a schematic/PCB layout program is a better choice.
  4. When choosing between stripboard and perfboard, while stripboard is generally superior, it does take up more room, so if space is tight you may need to stick with perfboard.
